Sex Ed for First Graders

My elder daughter attends a private school that values highly having the children learn from one another, and learn to function in groups, so there are times when the youngest groups (like her K-1 class) mingle with even the junior high kids (6-8th graders). This sometimes causes amusing consternation that is taken in stride by all.

Case in point: her class is currently doing a unit on measurement in math. Her teacher asked the other teachers in the school to each put out a few special objects for the K-1 kids to drop in and first estimate the size of and then measure with their rulers. Clusters of two and three kids roamed the school together measuring objects in each classroom.

All went smoothly but for one incident in which a pair of first graders dropped in during the moment when the 6th graders were studying the human reproductive system and had their books open to revealing medical diagrams. Needless to say, the 6th graders were not emotionally mature enough to continue this lesson in the presence of little kids. Much giggling and hiding of textbooks ensued, and the little ones were re-directed to visit other classes until the sex ed lesson was over.

Amusing as heck, though!
