Socks
Posted: November 28, 2007 at 10:26 am by DrobOkay, I know this isn’t a particularly original or profound observation, but socks are a real pain to keep track of.
This has driven me crazy for years, but now that there are 4 of us? Aaargghhhh!
Sorting socks sucks. And trying to get out the door in the morning when neither I nor the 7-year-old have a matched pair in the drawer? Gah!!!!
I just took a load of laundry out of the drier and sorted it. It had 4 matched pairs of socks, and 7 mismatches. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? The socks were all together when they went into the basket, weren’t they? This isn’t even a particularly bad load of wash– it didn’t have much of the kids’ clothing in it. Those loads generally have many more mismatched socks.
Has anyone, in the history of the world, found a way to deal with this that isn’t crazy-making?

We could move somewhere warm where we can be barefoot all the time.

Okay, I have one suggestion. You know those net bags for putting lingerie in the washing machine? One per family member, hung up next to the laundry basket. Socks and socks alone go in the bags, and they get laundered that way. All the socks stay together, and none escape.
I don’t do this myself, I read it in a magazine and have never gotten around to implementing it. But I MEAN to!
In the meantime, when I do laundry I try to reduce sock sortage by doing combining the laundry of people who do not have similar feet. My laundry with Paul’s (all his socks are those boy socks with grey toes and heels). 8-year-old Rob’s with 2-year-old Elizabeth’s. 6-year-old William’s with 2-year-old Edward’s and 6-month-old Henry’s. Paul once did William’s laundry with Rob’s, and I told him I was on the verge of throwing out all the socks and starting over rather than try to sort them.

Those are both excellent suggestions, Swistle. Thank you!
